AI “Game Engine” recreates Doom
Recently Doom Got recreated or cloned by AI. This came up in one of the AI Newsletter I follow.
The Gist is that Doom GameNGen is a realtime diffusion based engine sending frames of training data to the screen in real time.
In my basic understanding its a real-time video generator. The engine was trained on videos playthroughs of million of doom frames and is able to recreate the video frames based on what it learnt.
Still has issues
But AI imagery generated still have issues, one is the UI has glitches, some of the character seem to be blurred or ghost in. It does not have actual realtime 3d space or logic, I don’t think it can do proper gameplay logic or code at this point.
I am not too worried about this current iteration, it feels more like interactive video, rather than a game engine writing the game rules and building 3D Meshes with AI.
It’s still early stage but it is impressive as a concept. I can see this helping upscaling existing game engines graphics on low-spec machines or get integrated into other pipeline tools.
Game Devs Channels Code Money and Game from Scratch covering GameNGen and how it might affect game dev. At the moment it’s still not even close.

Concord - What is wrong with live Service Game Design
Found an interesting social post by Josh Bycer, wrote about the issues of live service game design in concord. Some of the issues he talks about are the F2P incentives and not learning from Mobile F2P Design and monetisation issues. Its a big deep dive into what went wrong.
Multiplayer is not the selling point of the game
monetization model must be something new not just cosmetic
Need for continued development so new stuff can be added
No product differentiation from the other products

Blog Article Excerpts
The Pain is Gone
The first thing that developers tried with MMOs and first-generation F2P was “fun pain.” This is the act of creating intentional barriers and frustration in your game to get someone to spend money to get rid of them. While modern fans may be laughing as they’re reading this, this was considered the norm and standard for many games released in the mid 2000’s/early 2010’s; there were presentations and conventions dedicated to figuring out the right kind of pain.
As mobile and live service design evolved from about 2016-on, this has been phased out of all modern and popular mobile games. As another point, the best-selling games today have also moved away from in-game ads, that were also considered a form of annoying the player.
Multiplayer not the solution
multiplayer is not the selling point for live service design. It is a popular feature, but it’s not what keeps someone playing a live service game and spending money. Multiplayer is an example of user-generated content in a game, as the players themselves are the content, but this in of itself cannot be monetized. Releasing content that purposely gives someone an unfair advantage is the death knell for many live service games.

Concord’s marketing and approach to live service feels 5 years too late. The greater problem is that many developers assume that multiplayer can act as the padding to give them time to release new content for their game.
But that also raises another point, a new expansion every six months, new story content, or new maps, this doesn’t drive monetization. Games like Genshin Impact, Arknights, and other mobile examples, are not focusing on multiplayer, so how do they make tons of money each month?

Deadlock Lore

On the opposite side of Concord we have deadlock some leaks about the game came though the verge and other media. I was more interested in the characters and the lore of it.
Based on the videos online, it looks like a Noir fantasy steampunk game where magic and the supernatural is part of this world. You can do things like revive others and use magical powers. Based on te game play it has a a lot of
Astral Gates and Malestroms these gates or supernatural events so these gates allowed evil supernatural forces to enter our world and so you battle them.
Not sure but saw on reddit there is some visual novel portion going to accompany the game.

I have not tried this game but it looks more chaotic than the usual shooters as it combines MOBA elements and Hero Shooters together.
